Background Information

The word tungsten is derived from the Swedish words "tung" meaning heavy, and "sten", meaning stone.

Tungsten is a very hard material with high density symbolized by W or atomic number 74 on the periodic elements table. The chemical symbol W comes from the material's earlier Germanic name, Wolfram. Wolfram refers to the mineral wolframite, from which tungsten is extracted. The name wolframite means "devourer of tin" and is the name given by the medieval German smelters who found that tin ores containing tungsten had a much lower yield, since the mineral interfered with the smelting of the tin by "devouring the tin like a wolf".

History, Properties, and Uses:
Pure tungsten metal was first discovered and isolated in 1783 by two Spanish chemists and brothers Juan José and Fausto Elhuyar in samples of the mineral wolframite.

Tungsten is a light steelish-gray to whitish lustrous metal, which is a solid at room temperature. In its pure form, it is soft enough to be able to be cut with a saw, and malleable enough that it can be drawn into wire or molded into different shapes.

Today, tungsten is primarily obtained from wolframite and scheelite using the same basic method developed by José and Elhuyar: tungsten ores are crushed, cleaned and treated with alkalis to form tungsten trioxide. Tungsten trioxide is then heated with carbon or hydrogen gas, forming tungsten metal and carbon dioxide or tungsten metal and water vapor.

When Tungsten is processed with carbon and other elements it is transformed into Tungsten Carbide, an extremely hard tungsten compound (measuring between 8 and 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, where diamonds measure 10 on the same scale).

Tungsten is alloyed with steel to form tough metals that are stable at high temperatures. Tungsten-steel alloys have important uses in industry and technology because they retain their hardness and their strength and stability at high temperatures, for example, Tungsten Carbide is used to make such things as high speed cutting tools, drill bits, mining machinery, and rocket engine nozzles.

Tungsten has the highest melting point among all metals, and the highest tensile strength (at temperatures over 3410°C or 6170°F). Due to this extraordinary melting point at almost 6200°F, tungsten is used exclusively to make light bulb filaments for incandescent light bulbs. Tungsten also forms compounds with calcium and magnesium that have phosphorescent properties and are used in fluorescent light bulbs and electric and television tubes.

Tungsten is also used as a target for X-ray production, as heating elements in electric furnaces and for parts of spacecraft and missiles which must withstand high temperatures.

Another benefit to tungsten is that it has excellent corrosion resistance and is attacked only slightly by most mineral acids. It is a very environmentally friendly material.
